9. Employment Classification & Payroll

Team classification is how we categorize people based on job duties, responsibilities, and level of authority. It determines employment status and eligibility for benefits, compensation, and legal protections.

Our team members are classified into one of three categories, in accordance with accepted HR practices and U.S. federal or state law:

  • US-based Exempt employees
  • US-based Non-exempt employees
  • Non-US-based Contractors

We use the terms team member or employee broadly in this handbook to refer to all full-time contributors, whether based in the U.S. or internationally. Below is what each category means for you:

Exempt Employees

Exempt employees are salaried and not eligible for overtime pay. They are exempt from certain wage and hour laws, including minimum wage and overtime requirements. These roles are typically management, professional, or administrative positions.

Non-Exempt Employees

Non-exempt employees are eligible for overtime pay and subject to state and federal minimum wage and overtime requirements. These roles may be hourly or salaried but generally do not include management authority. Examples include production, creative, or administrative roles.

Non-US-Based Contractors

Contractors outside the U.S. are paid a flat semi-monthly amount for a full-time level of effort. While we cannot provide U.S.-style health or wellness benefits, we strive to ensure that compensation is competitive and sufficient to help cover similar benefits locally, at the contractor’s discretion.

Payroll

  • Employees are paid semi-monthly through Gusto, on the 15th and last day of each month.
  • Contractors are paid according to their contract terms.
  • Overtime eligibility depends on your classification (exempt vs. non-exempt).
